Australia sells more arms to Saudi Arabia

Australia approved more military exports to Saudi Arabia in 2022 than in previous years, despite calls to ban such sales due to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The Australian government does not release any information about what equipment is being exported, but it has previously said it could include weapons, munitions, armor, radios, simulators, and training equipment.

Human rights groups have criticized the exports, saying they could be used to commit human rights abuses in Yemen. They also say the lack of transparency about the exports is concerning.

The Australian government has defended the exports, saying they are assessed against a range of factors, including Australia's international obligations, human rights, and national security.

The defense minister, Richard Marles, has announced a review of the laws governing the trade in defense and dual-use technology. The review is being led by experienced public servant and diplomat Peter Tesch and former Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chair Graeme Samuel.

The review is expected to consider the issue of military exports to Saudi Arabia, among other things.
